The History of Mr. Water Safety
by Robert S. Forbes, Sr.
In the early to middle 1930's, John LaPrade had "Rooster" ( one of his hired helpers) build a pile of rocks tall enough to stick out of the water on the shallow spot where Moccasin and Wildcat join the main lake. In 1947 or '48, David Sanders and Bob Forbes dug up a sycamore on Bob's lot and planted it in or near the pile of rocks- and it lived for 4 to 5 years.
After it died, David put one of his old red hunting shirts on the dead tree. Then Mason Whitney carved a human figure out of plywood, painted it and wrote "Mr. Water Safety" across the chest. Mason may have replaced this at least one time.
After it gave up the ghost, the power company put up a battery powered flashing light. This lasted for several years and was replaced by a solar powered light until lightning destroyed it. The power company then laid an underwater cable to assure a reliable source of power.
